ESFI Expands “Always Look Up” Overhead Power-Line Safety Campaign

ESFI updated its “Always Look Up” campaign to address overhead power-line contacts affecting homeowners and workers in non-electrical occupations. Its analysis says overhead-line contact accounts for 48% of workplace electrical fatalities and 30% of all U.S. electrical fatalities in the cited data.

The risk extends beyond electricians

ESFI identifies homeowners, heavy-truck operators, tree trimmers, roofers and painters among the groups that can encounter overhead lines. The campaign emphasizes that visible lines can still be missed during routine outdoor tasks.

Practical distance guidance

ESFI advises staying at least 10 feet from power lines and 35 feet from downed lines. It also recommends carrying ladders horizontally and avoiding contact with anything touching a power line.

Why the update matters

The campaign broadens electrical-safety coverage beyond indoor devices and installation hardware. Its statistics should be attributed to ESFI and the cited U.S. datasets, not generalized to other countries without evidence.
