ULSE Reports E-Bike Battery-Safety Awareness and Charging Gaps

ULSE reported survey findings on U.S. e-bike and e-scooter owners’ battery awareness and charging behavior. Among home-charging e-bike riders in the study, 49% reported blocking a home exit, while 53% of e-bike or e-scooter users reported leaving devices plugged in after full charge.

Reported charging behaviors

ULSE says 41% of surveyed e-mobility users reported charging overnight and 26% reported charging unattended while away from home. These percentages are self-reported findings from the surveyed group, not measurements of every owner’s behavior.

Standards and product systems

The article identifies UL 2849, UL 2272 and UL 2271 as standards addressing e-bikes, personal e-mobility devices and their batteries. It also notes an April 2024 update to UL 2272 covering stronger evaluation requirements for battery packs, chargers and other design elements.

Why the update matters

The findings support the use of matched chargers, visible charging locations and clear user instructions. The study covers e-mobility devices and does not assess wall-mounted USB outlets.
